Final Day of SIA

Never Summers 2012 Boards

SIA wound down today and closed doors at 1pm. The last day is always super mellow as everyone is pretty much partied out and showed out… Vendors were stoked about the turnout and response from buyers for the most part. Buyers were pumped about the new product for next winter. Pricepoint is still the name of the game but sales are growing universally and it looks like the snow industry is on a definite incline. Ryan Kingman from fledgling sock brand, Stance Socks, told us “We were really impressed. It was our first show. People seemed enthused about socks and the category itself and seeing someone come in and champion it. We’re having fun and selling some socks!” After 4 days we’d pretty much seen everything in the snowboard brand side of the show that we wanted to see. This year was by far much better in Denver as last year seemed a bit awkward with the show moving to a new city. Sunday is the best day to get free stuff too! Nobody wants to pay to ship all their promo goods back home, so if you’re in the right place at te right time, you’re in good shape. Tomorrow is the start of the on-snow demo portion of the show at Winter Park. Look for more updates for the mountain.

SIA Day 3

Gravis Analog Booth

Day 3 of SIA brought more good vibes. It wasn’t as busy as Friday (maybe because everyone was hung over) but it was still a pretty good showing. Most booths stayed busy throughout the day. Lots of good product out there for the upcoming season. Oakley released a new goggle yesterday, called the “Airbrake.” They’re pretty sick, peep em on Shaun White at the X-Games. With the show winding down everyone was excited for the outcome. Many brands told us that orders were up and they were very optimistic for the coming season. Sunday the show closes at 1 to conclude the 4-day event and vendors will pack up and head to Winter Park for the on-snow demo portion. Can’t wait for that!

MFM was spinning at T9.

New noise from Frends.

Friday nights Nike Ciplo party.

Clearly excited.

SIA Day Two

New boot from DC.

Day two of SIA in Denver and the show picked up big time. Typical shenanigans for Friday. Loud music, lots of people, beer, beautiful women and free stuff everywhere. There was a super good vibe today and everyone was beyond busy. More product sneak peaks revealed more collabs and limited editions. Vests are big for next season too. Look for more reserved colorways than the brights of the days before. Also, get ready for some entirely new products from some of the top players in the industry. A lot of brands are branching into new parts like gloves, bags and base layers. We’ll be sure to show you some hot new stuff in April’s “Now Dropping” section of the mag. Enjoy the PG rated pics below and look for more updates this weekend.

SIA Day One

Skullcandy’s vintage collection.

SIA kicked off today in downtown Denver Colorado. The show was bigger this year than last years by several dozen exhibitors and more registered attendees. Thursday was a bit quiet for opening day, but nonetheless most exhibitors found it to be a very productive day anyway. SIA reported just today that December was a record month in action sports apparel sales. Exhibitors were excited for the coming season. We saw a lot of major brand collaborations, look for those next season. Many of them bridged the gaps between helmets and goggles, boots and gloves and products and artists. Sick stuff, no doubt! Lots of pros and big names present today. When asked what he thought about SIA this year, Dingo told us “SIA is great this year! SIA is great, we’re here selling gloves and hats, shoes and jackets, selling a lot of sh**. This is like our Superbowl for us.” Mark Frank Montoya told us “[Denver] is off the hook. I’m from Denver originally, I’m in Utah now but it’s good now, it’s a little change. Being in Vegas is like kind of crazy and partying. People aren’t really as business minded as here, so it’s a little better. Me being form here, I’ve got a lot of friends and support here, so it’s going good, we’re cracking it and it’s growing.” With free beer every night as usual, Denver feels like a better fit this year for sure. Time will only tell. Look for an update tomorrow.

Plenty of this today… (Check out the guys in the back)

Dew Tour Slays The Beast

©Trevor Denman – 22′ Pipe

This past weekend The Dew Tour rolled into Killington Resort for it’s first time ever. It was an unseasonably cold weekend, but then again, it’s New England. The perfectly cut 22′ pipe was pretty impressive, not gonna lie. I can only imagine the time and money that went into building something like that? Future short article? Maybe. Anyways, it was a bit strange seeing men’s superpipe finals starting at 11:30 in the morning and I think it kept some of the typical knuckle-draggers from making it out. Nevertheless, Louie Vito showed up in full force. After clinching the top spot on his first run, Louie didn’t even need to take a second but he threw down anyway for the hell of it. Not too far behind was JJ Thomas in second and Mason Aguirre in third. We’re stoked to see another East Coaster taking home the big money! Not unusual, Torstein Horgmo took the top spot in Sunday’s mens slopestyle finals. All in all there was plenty of good snow and free stuff to keep everyone happy. Another year of Dew in the books.

Admiring their trophies.

I’m pretty sure he’s serious…

Crotched Video (Trailer) Park

©Trevor Denman

Even in arctic temperatures, Crotched Mountain was throwing down at last night’s Midnight Madness Video Park. Over 200 skiers and riders came out, rolling deep with crews of athletes and media to film, photograph and shred at this invitational exposition. The Video Park crew had plenty of steep rails, boxes, and 50 foot booters in addition to the favorite feature: the Trailer Park Plaza. A hollowed out trailer, tagged up by the Crotched Crew, sat waiting to be conquered for a minute before crews came barreling through, stomping the steep and slick down box waiting on the other side. Other features included tree-bonks, pole jams, and sofa and picnic table gaps. ;)  Steez crew was out with riders from Shreddy Times riding, filming, and having a blast all night. For those not riding, a massive bonfire and dank beats helped to fight the frigid temps and gave all those who came out a place to chill out, watch the event and have a good time. Crotched Video Park is always a blast, no matter what weather it brings. Look for a full photo album shortly.

Eastern Snowboard League Debut’s

Destroyer Division Podium.

Upon the completion of registration, the snow subsided, prompting event organizers to run the big air portion of the contest. With prizes like a trip to Superpark 15, and Woodward at Copper on the line, riders in the Destroyer and Youngblood divisions went head to head, making powerful statements right from the opening bell. From the start front runners emerged, with Kade Madsen, Dylan Thomas, Elf Hamill, Marcus Stephens, Ron Forth, and a mysterious Yeti all dropping hammers. Not to be outshined, the ladies of the Aura division began throwing down as well, with riders Maggie Eshbaugh and Ashley Vander Meer bringing a variety of stylish spins to the table. Judges had their work cut out for them, with deteriorating weather plaguing not only their visibility, but riders’ ability to stomp their landings. With the lake snows increasing, the focus of the event shifted to a compact rail venue: a hubba featuring a down C box, triple barrel down, down-flat-down, as well as a mini quarter complete with two poly wedges and a poly cube to test the creativity of the field. Riders in the Youngblood division came out swinging, with riders like Tyler Ravelle, Ethan Pardowski and Steve Rosato doing some serious work. The Destroyer division featured non stop bangers from riders like Cody Voit, Peter Pape, Jarrod Barto, and Travis Jones. Riders in all divisions hiked the venue with a sense of urgency, all pushing each other until the end of scoring.

With two qualifying rounds in the books, judges set to work to hand out jerseys to finalists, with ten riders being selected from the Destroyer and Youngblood divisions, and three from the Aura division. The weather continued to deteriorate, forcing the finals to essentially be in the rail venue yet again. A thirty minute jam session was held, and upon completion, the judges turned in the final results..

Destroyer Division
1. Kade Madsen
2. Peter Pape
3. Cody Voit

Youngblood Division
1. Dylan Thomas
2. Tyler Ravelle
3. Steve Rosato

Aura Division
1. Maggie Eshbaugh
2. Ashley Vander Meer
3. Justine Nadherney
