Over this past weekend, Plymouth State students Adam Berthiaume, 21, and Zach Brown, 22, got to see their vision come to life. Two months ago they began to build the park that took them to the top of Rome Snowboards “Ima Betta Jibba” contest. After many long hours shoveling and countless barrels of snow, the park was complete. Their reward was to enjoy a weekend full of riding, partying, and getting to know the pros from Rome Snowboards. For these college students this was a dream come true. After a long weekend full of crazy nights they will never forget, Adam and Zach were willing to sit down and recap the weekend.

Clock: First off, congratulations on your winning the Rome “Ima Betta Jibba” contest. How are you feeling now that it’s all over?
Berthiaume: Tired. (laughs) Very tired. My voice is gone from the cheering and singing. I’m still in awe that it actually happened. It’s really a lot to process.
Zach Brown: I’m disappointed that they are gone but so happy that it happened.
Clock: Did the weekend turn out how you had hoped?
Berthiaume: Better. Great company and great laughs.
Brown: Yeah, the weather could have cooperated a bit more on Saturday but overall the weekend couldn’t have gone better.
Clock: Can you give us a glimpse of how the weekend played out?
Berthiaume: Thursday night the team showed up to take a look at the layout of the park. They stopped in and chatted for a bit but the real fun didn’t start till Friday. We rode all day and got acquainted with the team. That night we hit the bars had a wild time. Great parties on campus and lots of fun people. I would say we showed the Rome riders a good time.
Brown: Friday was great. Saturday’s weather was pretty cold and the conditions of the park were pretty icy. After riding all day we had another crazy night at the house with the team and some good friends. We got some free goodies including posters and hats. Such a rewarding weekend.
Clock: Had you been a fan of Rome before winning the contest and meeting the team?
Berthiaume: Absolutely. Rome has a summer sale that I attended. Low key but fun. They were very helpful and all about giving back to the community. A great group of relaxed, awesome people. They would talk to you one on one and do their best to evaluate your needs as a snowboarder. Rome is my kind of company. I walked away with a good sense of their business and how they operate.
Brown: Definitely. I had been aware of them and knew the riders from videos, LNP and a few others. Great products that I recently started riding.
Clock: What did you take away from the experience?
Berthiaume: Just keep pursuing your passion. After seeing and meeting these guys I have been re-inspired. Networking and seeing your potential future is such a relief, knowing that it’s possible is a great feeling. Meeting the people behind the gear was an experience as well.
Brown: That if you bust your ass you can get whatever it is that you are after.
Clock: What was your impression of the pros?
Berthiaume: I was in my room and heard someone knocking at the door. I walked down, opened the door, and I knew instantly who it was. Larry left the biggest impression. Big beard, long hair, it was unreal knowing that the pros were in my house. I was nervous to say the least, but it was great to see that they were having as good of a time as us. It went from awkward intros to a friendship by the end of the first day.
Brown: They were the coolest people I had met in a long time. Good people. You could tell that each one of them really got a lot out of life doing what they loved.
Clock: To be the winner of a national contest must boost the ego a bit. Any plans to recreate the experience next year?
Berthiaume: I would love to relive this weekend. Looking to do it again. We have a second location already picked out and blueprints are being worked on.
Brown: Working on the plans right now. The location has been picked, features have been selected, and I’m shooting to win again next year.
Clock: There was some pretty stiff competition this year. Are you ready to take it on again?
Berthiaume: I’m slightly hesitant to do it again strictly because of the time commitment. Its a long way away but we will see.
Brown: Absolutely. Another win would be awesome.
Clock: How are things going as far as campus fame?
Berthiaume: Not to much. I haven’t heard people talking but I know they are talking about it. A couple professors have mentioned it. Plenty of friends have congratulated me on it. Walking on sunshine is the best way I can describe how I feel. I was excited all day every day till they showed up. Romes coming to my house!, is all I could think of. There were plenty of people from around town that have come to take pictures. It is such a great feeling.
Brown: I had one professor come up to me and tell me that his kids loved the video so much that they forced him to go to the store and buy them suits so that they could wear them to the mountain the next time they went.
Clock: How many man hours have gone into creating the current park?
Berthiaume: Between planning, shoveling, and waiting on the weather it was around 70-80 hours of back breaking work.
Brown: Lot of hard work but it paid off in the end. Definitely going to have to step it up next year. Two in a row would such a rush.
Clock: Are there any plans to keep going with the current park?
Berthiaume: Not really. We are happy with the win and will keep it maintained. But now its time to get back to the real world. We put off lots of work to finish the park in time. Now its time to get back to the books.
Brown: No big additions but tweaking the park will be a constant. I plan to keep working on my ability to ride the park and try to get better everyday.
Clock: You had some haters there for a while when the results of the contest came out. What would you say to others that are having second thoughts about entering?
Berthiaume: You can do anything you want to. It was an unrealistic goal when we first started. People say you won’t get there but look at the people at Rome. They got there. If you put your mind to it you can achieve it.
Brown: It’s all about the effort you put into it. If you want it, go for it.
